Why Cold Brew is NOT Better Than Iced Coffee

Cold Brew Vs Iced Coffee

Starbucks has offered cold brew coffee for more than 2 years.  It took me no time to try it and even less to figure out it just wasn’t for me.

Here’s why:

1.  I like regular hot coffee cold because it doesn’t give me the chocolate taste that you get from cold brew.

2. I don’t need as much cream.

Yes, I only have two reasons because really that’s all I need.

(Keep reading if you want the anecdote to this)

I love coffee and used to go to Starbucks everyday.  I now go to the popular, and to some, overrated coffee chain only about 3 times a week.

Why have I slacked up?

I got a Keurig as a gift and rediscovered Cafe Du Monde chickory & coffee. Now that New Orleans, French Quarter stuff is mmmm mmmm good! If you haven’t tried it I highly recommend.  Also, don’t get the k-cups.  Such a waste!  Get the can and buy the reusable k-cups.

But I digress…

Here’s why I prefer the option that tends to be called more acidic and less strong.  You know…just plain ol’ hot brewed coffee chilled.  The taste!  Isn’t that what it all boils down to?

Starbucks cold brew is definitely smoother but it also has more of a chocolate taste.  I would go further and say it’s more fudgey (is that a word?).

My coffee order is simple:  Venti iced coffee, light cream, unsweetened.

It’s not that I don’t use anything to sweeten it but I prefer SweetN’ Low (yes, I know the saccharin is gonna kill me).  I don’t trust the baristas to put sweet and low in my iced coffee because many times they’ve messed up and put either Splenda or Equal in my iced coffee and that’s just gross.

If you are anything like me and you don’t like flavored coffee then stay away from cold brew.   Basically, what I’m saying is that a coffee that’s more mocha than coffee is just a let down.

Another thing, I need the recipe’d amount of cream for Starbucks cold brew.  I don’t know if it’s to drown out the chocolatey taste or what.

The cold brew is not brewed with hot water as is it’s counterpart.  It’s brewed with cold water and allowed to do it’s thang for hours to get the smooth taste.

To sum it up.  I like regular hot coffee cold because it doesn’t give me the chocolate taste and I don’t need as much cream.

Hopefully I didn’t go over the river and through the woods too much.  I have an issue with rambling.

This isn’t my exact Keurig (mine was a gift) as you can see in the pics but I love it because it’s red and you aren’t breaking the bank. The k-cup I have is from Bed Bath & Beyond but I’ve seen this one at Target.
